NTIA releases analysis ahead of initial '5G challenge'

Industry is concerned the Pentagon will be biased toward large companies and support a single company's variant during a new effort aimed at developing open 5G networks, according to an analysis by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The analysis follows a notice of inquiry released in January by the NTIA on behalf of the Defense Department asking for suggestions on how to execute a fifth-generation wireless technology competition, called a "5G challenge." Feedback would help NTIA and the U.S. government identify and mitigate challenges in executing the competition and help NTIA leverage its engineering expertise to construct a challenge that would maximize the benefit to both the open 5G stack market and the Pentagon on an accelerated schedule, according to the notice. The analysis was released Oct. 22 in advance of a potential initial 5G challenge in 2022, NTIA wrote in a statement. "The purpose of 5G challenges would be to support open interfaces, interoperability, and modularity - accelerating market forces that promote vendor diversity," according to the NTIA. "Open and interoperable 5G networks will encourage new market participation, allowing innovative companies to develop plug-and-play 5G components and integrated systems."
