New legislation would establish an independent assessment of the $202 billion Ballistic Missile Defense System, chartering the JASON private scientific advisory panel to identify limitations of the collection of radars, interceptors and battle management, command and control tools that are designed to protect the nation against a long-range, North Korean nuclear strike.Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL) is sponsoring an amendment to the House fiscal year 2022 defense authorization bill that requires the defense secretary to commission the JASON Defense Advisory Council to update a 2010 study on discrimination capabilities of the BMDS."Since the completion of [the 2010] study, rogue nation threats have changed and capabilities of the missile defense system have evolved," states the amendment.
