Pure-Sensory Stroke in Pons Presented Isolated Perioral Sensory Symptoms

A76-year-old manwasconsulted with sudden-onset perioral numbness over 6 h after percutaneouscoronary interventions. Neurological examination revealed bilateral periorallight touch impairment, but no other focal neurological deficits were noticed. Brainmagneticresonance imaging and magneticresonanceangiography revealed an acute pontineinfarction and no stenosis ofrelated artery [Figure 1]. Pure-sensory strokein the pons,called cheiro-oralsyndrome, is resulted in theinvolvement of various lesions ofmediallemniscusand spinothalamictractand sensory changesare morelikely to becomeaffected simultaneously.[1,2] However, to the best of our knowledge,acase of isolated perioralsensory symptoms—not including finger (s)and hand—dueto the bilateralmediallesion ofmediallemniscus has not been reported. Neurologists should consider pontineinfarction in patients with isolated perioralsensory changes,especially after procedure developed embolus.
