Hawai‘i is one of the most culturally diverse states with 1 of the highest proportions of non-English speakers in the nation. According to the US Census Bureau, Hawai‘i’s total population aged 5 years and older is 1 337 965 with roughly 344 880 (25.8%) speaking a language other than English at home5 and 152 618 (11.4%) indicating that they speak English “less than very well,”6 classifying them as limited English proficient (LEP).
