Multilocular cystic renal cell tumors with Xp11 translocation-associated renal cell carcinoma features; report of 2 cases and review of literature

Multilocular cystic renal cell tumor is recognized as a cystic neoplasm with cytologic features of renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type however to lack any mass forming proliferative or expansile component. It is recognized to have an entirely indolent behavior without recurrence potential and therefore in the most recent WHO classification it has been renamed as “tumor of low malignant potential” instead of carcinoma to reflect its indolent behavior. These tumors have been considered as resembling renal cell carcinoma clear cell type however more recently several cases have been found to have the cytologic features of trans- location renal cell carcinoma. We illustrate two cases in this report to draw attention the heterogeneity of multilocular cystic renal cell tumor.
