NORAD eyes FY-22 funding for CMD sensors, Arctic pLEO comms

The head of the bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command has outlined for Congress a trio of unfunded fiscal year 2022 elevated sensor projects aimed at improving the U.S. and Canada's ability to defend domestic targets against advanced Russian and Chinese subsonic and hypersonic cruise missiles as well as maritime surface threats. On June 7, Gen. Glen VanHerck sent lawmakers a list - obtained by Inside Defense - of FY-22 priorities not funded in the Pentagon's spending request that are focused on hardening domestic air defenses of select targets as well as one project to improve communications in the high North. VanHerck is head of NORAD and U.S. Northern Command. "I am submitting a prioritized list of unfunded requirements . . . that are focused on increasing domain awareness and developing information dominance," VanHerck wrote in a letter accompanying an issue paper describing the four projects. The three elevated sensor projects are an Over the Horizon Radar project; a Polar Over the Horizon Radar project; and an Elevated Radar project tailored for the Washington, DC, area.
