MDA seeks new CMD layer, Guam defense system in $8.9B FY-22 request

The Missile Defense Agency's fiscal year 2022 budget request seeks funding for a new Guam missile defense capability, the creation of a cruise missile defense to protect domestic sites against Russian and Chinese threats as part of an $8.9 billion proposal that would also fund development of a Next Generation Interceptor, a Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor constellation and a hypersonic defense system. MDA's budget request seeks $7.1 billion for research, development, test and evaluation; $1.2 billion for procurement; $505 million for operations and maintenance; and $4.4 million for military construction, according to an overview document published today. The project to modernize the GMD system with a new interceptor seeks $926 million in FY-22, funding that would support two competing designs for a Next Generation Interceptor by Lockheed Martin and a Northrop Grumman-Raytheon team in a contest to build a new guided missile intended to protect the United States before the end of the decade from advanced North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles.
