Physician Career Choice and Satisfaction:Empirical Studies of PracticingPhysicians summarizes the resultsof three studies that detail how andwhy physicians choose the types ofpractices where they work, physicians’personal characteristics, andtheir satisfaction with their work.The author of the book’s preface,John R. Graham, notes that the Universityof New Mexico’s medicalschool was established in 1961 andthat there was debate among itsteaching faculty on how to bestteach medicine (p. iv). He adds thatpeople learn best when they have areason to learn rather than learningand regurgitating facts, as researchfrom George Miller at the timeshowed. Therefore, the “shift towardmotivation for learningemerged” (p. iv).
