Regenerative Endodontics: A Paradigm Shift in Clinical Endodontics

Preserving the natural dentition in its normalformand function is one ofthe major goals ofendodontictreatment. Re-establishing thelost vitalityand development ofrootmaturation in immature permanent teethwith pulp necrosis/apical periodontitis is quietchallenging clinically. The verybasis ofregenerativeendodontics relies on theconcept oftissueengineering using stemcells, biomimeticscaffold,and bioactive growth factors toregeneratethe pulp tissue damaged bymicrobialinfection, injury, or developmental defects. In clinicalendodontics, thisapproach is referred to asa“paradigmshift.”Even though repair instead oftrueregeneration isachieved with current protocols, it is hoped that further research in thearea ofstem-cell-based tissueengineeringwillallowfor trueregeneration and improved treatment outcomes. Theaimofthis reviewis to discussabout thevariousaspects ofregenerativeendodontics,currentclinical protocols,and thefuture of pulp regeneration techniques.
