Introduction: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most com-mon form of primary glomerulonephritis worldwide and at least 10% ofpatients with IgAN will require renal replacement therapy within 10years of diagnosis. There has been great interest in elucidating thepathogenic links between IgAN and the mucosal immune system sincethe initial description of this disease, because the poorly galactosylatedIgA1 deposited in the mesangium in IgAN is more typically seen inmucosal secretions. The aim of this study was to investigate whetherIgA1 which binds to an alimentary antigen is more undergalactosylatedthan that which binds to a systemic antigen, and to see if this gal-actosylation differs between Caucasian and Chinese cohorts.
