Decreased levels of the steroid hormone estrogen at menopause are associated with an increasedincidence of cardiovascular disease and loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. Consequently, ithasbeengenerallyexpectedthatestrogenmaybeacrucialprotectivefactoragainstthedevelopmentof cardiovascular disease and that it may be implicated in the regulation of skeletal muscle functionin women. Estrogen signals through the classical nuclear estrogen receptors (ER) α and β, as wellas the membrane G protein-coupled receptor GPR30 (also referred to as GPER), via the genomicor non-genomic pathway.
