In the title compound, C 5 H 3 ClN 2 O 3 (systematic name: 2-chloro-4-nitro-pyridin-1-ium-1-olate), the nitro group is essentially coplanar with the aromatic ring, with a twist angle of 6.48?(8)°. The mol-ecular packing exhibits a herringbone pattern with the zigzag running along the b axis; here, there are no short contacts, hydrogen bonds, or π – π inter-actions.
