Physiology without borders: report on physiology education workshops in India—IUPS Initiatives (2018–2019)

The International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS), a family of physiologists across the globe, embarked on a challenging path to bring Physiology to the Centre Stage through the recently concluded workshop series on “Physiology Education Techniques 2018: IUPS Initiative,” which was succeeded by “Hands-on Workshop on Medical Teaching Methodologies—2019: IUPS Initiative.” The goal of the workshop series was to equip young faculty members across India with three educational tools to best impart to their students the complexities and appreciation of physiological sciences in basic and applied fields. The prime mover of the Physiology Education Workshops was the Report, Physiology–Current Trends and Future Challenges, presented in the 38th IUPS Congress held in Brazil. Inputs received from the panel of advisors and the international and national resource faculty resulted in the tri-series workshops that were held at three apex centers of learning in three parts of India: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jodhpur, Rajasthan (November 3–5, 2018); North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Shillong, Meghalaya (November 10–12, 2018); and Government Medical College (GMC) Kozhikode, Kerala (November 15–18, 2018). The successful conduct of the tri-series workshop on physiology education techniques was followed by the “Hands-on Workshop on Medical Teaching Methodologies” held at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) at Gangtok, Sikkim (November 5–7, 2019), which extended the scope of the education program to all medical and paramedical disciplines.
