The title compound, [N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-(L)-alanine]Co(III) thiocyanate ( style="font-family:Verdana;">1 style="font-family:Verdana;">) was obtained from the reaction of style="font-family:;" "=""> style="font-family:Verdana;">Co(OOCH style="font-family:Verdana;">3 style="font-family:Verdana;">) style="font-family:Verdana;">2 style="font-family:Verdana;"> style="white-space:nowrap;">·H style="font-family:Verdana;">2 style="font-family:Verdana;">O style="font-family:Verdana;"> with the tridentate reduced Schiff base ligand, N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-(L)-alanine (L) and style="font-family:;" "=""> style="font-family:Verdana;">NH style="font-family:Verdana;">4 style="font-family:Verdana;">SCN and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-visible, TGA and single- style="font-family:Verdana;"> style="font-family:;" "=""> style="font-family:Verdana;">crystal X-ray diffraction. Structural and spectroscopic analyses reveal [Co(L) style="font-family:Verdana;">2 style="font-family:Verdana;">)]SCN style="font-family:Verdana;"> to be style="font-family:;" "=""> style="font-family:Verdana;">monomeric with Cobalt(III) adopting a pseudo-octahedral geometry, coordinating to two reduce Schiff base ligands. In the crystal lattice, the thiocyanate anion forms an intermolecular SCN style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">·HN style="font-family:Verdana;">amine style="font-family:Verdana;"> hydrogen bond, while adjacent monomers are linked by intermolecular O style="font-family:Verdana;">carboxyl style="font-family:Verdana;"> style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">·HN style="font-family:Verdana;">amine style="font-family:Verdana;"> style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">· style="white-space:nowrap;">·H-bonds to form a supramolecular network. style="font-family:Verdana;">This work is therefore undertaken in an attempt to construct coordination framework structures of varying properties using the mixed-ligand strategy involving reduced Schiff bases and the thiocyanate ion style="font-family:Verdana;">.
