The number of patients with coronary artery disease(CAD) has increased worldwide because of the highprevalence of glucose intolerance, hypertensionand dyslipidemia, resulting in not only a medical but alsoan economic burden even after the robust development ofdrugs and treatment procedures. Throughout the decades,great efforts have been paid to overcome CAD, and theinflammatory reactions followed by organic remodeling ofthe plaque in diseased vessels have been elucidated as thecentral dogma of atherosclerosis. On the other hand,significant contributions by Japanese researchers proposedcoronary vasoconstriction as a distinctive cause of a specifictype of angina, which had been mentioned as “variantangina” in Western countries since Prinzmetal et al firstdescribed this disease in 1959.
