Neuralcrestcellsmigratealongtwodiscretepathwayswithinthetrunkofdevelopingembryos.Inthechick,earlymigratingcrestcellsareconfinedtoaventralpathwaymedialtothedermamyotomewhilelatercellsmigrateonadorsalpathwaylateraltothedermamyotome.HereweshowthatSlitsareexpressedinthedermamyotome,thatearlymigratingcrestcellsexpresstheSlitreceptorsRobo1andRobo2,thatSlit2repelsmigratingcrestcellsinaninvitroassay,andthatthemisexpressionofadominant-negativeRobo1receptorinducesasignificantfractionofearlycrestcellstomigrateectopicallyinthedorso-lateralpathway.ThesefindingssuggestthatSlits,mostlikelythoseexpressedinthedermamyotome,helptoconfinethemigrationofearlycrestcellstotheventralpathway./p/div
