ExpressionoftheemXenopus/emhomologofthemammaliantranscriptionfactorAP-2α(XAP-2)isactivatedthroughouttheanimalhemisphereshortlyafterthemidblastulatransition,andbecomesrestrictedtoprospectiveepidermisbytheendofgastrulation,underthecontrolofBMPsignalmodulation.Elevatedexpressioninthefutureneuralcrestregionbeginsatthistime.EctopicexpressionofXAP-2canrestoretranscriptionofepidermalgenesinneuralizedectoderm,bothinectodermalexplantsandintheintactembryo.Likewise,lossofXAP-2function,accomplishedbyinjectionofantisenseoligonucleotidesorbyoverexpressionofantimorphicXAP-2derivatives,leadstolossofepidermalandgainofneuralgeneexpression.Thesetreatmentsalsoresultingastrulationfailure.Thus,AP-2isacriticalregulatorofectodermaldeterminationthatisrequiredfornormalepidermaldevelopmentandmorphogenesisinthefrogembryo./p/div
