Wedescribemajortransitionsinthetypeandmodificationofchromatin-associatedproteinsduringtheearlydevelopmentofemXenopuslaevis/em.HistoneH4isstoredinthediacetylatedformintheeggandisprogressivelydeacetylatedduringnormaldevelopment.Ifhistonedeacetylasesareinhibitedwithsodiumbutyrate,hyperacetylatedhistoneH4onlyaccumulatesafterthemid-blastulatransition.Thetypeoflinkerhistoneinchromatinalsochangesduringembryogenesis,frompredominantlytheB4proteinatthemid-blastulatransitiontopredominantlyhistoneH1attheendofgastrulation.Thesetransitionsinchromatincompositioncorrelatewithmajorchangesinthereplicativeandtranscriptionalactivityofembryonicnuclei./p/div
