InanuranamphibianssuchasRanapipiensandXenopuslaevis,thegermlineageiswidelythoughttobedeterminedattheearliststagesindevelopment,inresponsetoaprelocalisedcytoplasmicdeterminant(thegermplasm)presentinthevegetalpoleoftheegg.However,thedeterminedstateofgermplasm-bearingcellshasnotbeentestedinanurans.Inthiswork,wehavelabelledgermplasm-bearingcellsfromtwostagesofdevelopmentwithacell-autonomousfluorescentlabel,andinsertedthemintounlabelledhostembryos.Inbothcasesthedonorcellswerepluripotent,anddifferentiatedintoavarietyofcelltypes.Thisresultmayhelpresolvetheparadoxicaldataongermplasmandgermcelldeterminationfromdifferentanimalgroups.
