Byisotopicandisochronictransplantationsoffragmentsofquailneuraltubeintochick,ithasbeenpreviouslyshownthatentericganglioncellsarisefromthea€?vagala€?(somites1a€“7)andthea€?lumbo-sacrala€?(behindsomite28)levelsoftheneuralcrest,whilethetrunkregion(somites8a€“28)givesrisetoorthosympatheticganglionchainandadrenomedullarycells.Thelatteroriginatepreciselyfromtheneuralcrestcorrespondingtosomites18a€“24(i.e.,a€?adrenomedullarya€?levelofthecrest).Heterotopictransplantationsoffragmentsofquailneuraltubeintochickhavebeencarriedoutinthepresentwork.Whenthea€?adrenomedullarya€?levelofthequailneuraltubeisgraftedintothea€?vagala€?regionofachick,thecrestcellscolonizethegutanddifferentiateintoentericgangliaofAuerbach'sandMeissner'splexi.Ifquailcephalicneuralcrestistransplantedinthea€?adrenomedullarya€?levelofachick,quailcellsmigrateintothesuprarenalglandsanddifferentiateintoadrenomedullarycells.Mesectodermalcellsmigratelaterally,anddifferentiateintocartilage,dermisandconnectivetissues.Thusitappearsthatpreferentialpathwayslocatedatpreciselevelsoftheembryoleadcrestcellstotheirdefinitivesites.Ontheotherhandthedifferentiationoftheautonomicneuroblastsiscontrolledbytheenvironmentinwhichcrestcellsarelocalizedattheendoftheirmigration.Onthecontrary,mesenchymalderivativesofthecephalicneuralcrestappeartobeearlydeterminedsincetheydifferentiateaccordingtotheirpresumptivefatewhentransplantedintothetrunk.
