ReasonablyprecisemeasurementsinembryosofFundulusheteroclitisandAmbystomamaculatumindicatetheexistenceofaerobicelectrontransportsystemsduringallstagesofembryogenesis.Glycolyticsystemsarealsopresent.Dinitrophenolandcyanideinappropriateconcentrationinhibitcellulardifferentiationwithoutdrasticallydisturbingprotoplasmicmaintenanceprocesses.Itappearshighlyprobablethatdifferentiationandmorphogenesisintheanamniotaarestrictlydependentuponaerobicmetabolicprocesses,butthatmaintenanceandmovementmaybepoweredbyglycolyticmetabolism.TheaerobicmetabolicpathwaysexhibitanontogenyoftheirownindevelopmentofF.heteroclitis.AninitialantimycinA-insensitivemetabolicpathwayismaintainedwhileanewantimycinA-sensitivepathwaydevelopsfollowinggastrulation.Bothsystemsarepresentintheadultteleostbutvarywithdifferentorgans.Theenzymesystemsstudiedhereexistinthecellsofthedevelopingembryoandareabsentfromtheyolk.
