Ultravioletirradiationofthevegetalhemisphereofthefertilizedamphibian(Xenopuslaevis)eggpriortofirstcleavageresultsintheembryodevelopinganincompletesetofneuralstructures.Theeffectsofirradiationonvariousmorphogeneticprocesses,includingcelldivision,formationofthedorsallip,invaginationatgastrulation,andneuralinductionbytheprimaryorganizer,wereexamined.Adecreaseinthecapacityforinvaginationduringgastrulationandadiminutionintheneuralinducingcapacityoftheprimaryorganizerwerefoundtoaccountfordefectiveneurulationinirradiatedembryos.Consequently,irradiationoftheuncleavedeggleadstointerferencewiththeeventsofbothgastrulationandneurulation.
