Whendissociatedcellsofneuralretinaeof9-day-oldchickembryoswereculturedinEagle'sminimumessentialmediumsupplementedwithdialyzedfetalcalfserum,boththeproliferationanddifferentiationoftheneuralretinalcellswereinhibited.Thesecellsremainedquiescentandflattened.Whenascorbicacidwasaddedtosuchamedium,thecellsstartedtogrowanddifferentiatedintolentoidbodiesandpigmentedcellsafterabout10days.
