ConidiaofAspergillusnidulansplacedinliquidnutrientmediumgerminatetoproducehyphaethatgrowforadayormoreasundifferentiatedcolonies.After20hrofgrowth,butnotbefore,suchcoloniesbecomeresponsivetoinductionanddevelopconidia-bearingstructures(conidiophores)afterbeingplacedontothesurfaceofmedia-saturatedmembranefilters.Thusthetimeatwhichthesecoloniesbecomedevelopmentallycompetentis20hr.Amutanthasbeenisolatedwhichisindistinguishablefromthewild-typestrainexceptthatitbecomescompetenttobeinduced2hrbeforethewild-typestrain.Atleastonegenecontrollingcompetencehasbeencharacterizedasachromosomalallele.Wehavethereforebeenabletomeasurethetimeatwhichagrowingcolonybecomesdevelopmentallycompetent,andhaveshownthatcompetenceisundergeneticcontrol.
