Since 1980, the American College of Cardiology (ACC)and American Heart Association (AHA) have translatedscientific evidence into clinical practice guidelines withrecommendations to improve cardiovascular health. Theseguidelines, based on systematic methods to evaluate andclassify evidence, provide a cornerstone of quality cardio-vascular care. In response to reports from the Institute ofMedicine 1,2 and a mandate to evaluate new knowledge andmaintain relevance at the point of care, the ACC/AHA TaskForce on Clinical Practice Guidelines (Task Force) modifiedits methodology.
