Metabolomic profiling reveals suppression of oxylipin biosynthesis during the early stages of legume–rhizobia symbiosis

Theestablishmentofsymbiosisbetweenleguminousplantsandrhizobialbacteriarequiresrapidmetabolicchangesinbothpartners.WeutilizeduntargetedquantitativemassspectrometrytoperformmetabolomicprofilingofsmallmoleculesinextractsofthemodellegumeMedicagotruncatulatreatedwithrhizobialNodfactors.Onemetabolitecloselyresemblingthe9(R)‐HODEclassofoxylipinsreproduciblyshowedadecreaseinconcentrationwithinthefirsthourofinplantanodfactortreatment.OxylipinsareprecursorsofthejasmonicacidbiosyntheticpathwayandweshowedthatboththismetaboliteandjasmonicacidinhibitNodfactorsignaling.Since,oxylipinshavebeenimplicatedasantimicrobialcompoundsproducedbyplants,theseobservationssuggestthattheoxylipinpathwaymayplaymultiplerolesinfacilitatingNodfactorsignalingduringtheearlystagesofsymbiosis...
