Role of Oxidative Stress in Cardiovascular Diseases

ABSTRACT Oxidative stress is defined as an excessive bioavailability of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) due to imbalance of generation of ROS and antioxidant defense systems. ROS produced by vascular cells (endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and adventitial fibroblasts) are implicated as possible underlying pathogenic mechanism in a progression of cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic heart disease (angina pectoris), atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, cardiac arrhythmia and hypert.
