To the Editor: Salmonella spp.resistant to multiple antimicrobialagents have emerged worldwide inrecent years, but clinical relevancevaries with the agent to which resist-ance evolves. Fluoroquinolones areoften the drug of choice to treat gas-trointestinal infections in humans, andresistance to this class of antimicro-bial agents is associated withincreased illness and death (1).Resistance to fluoroquinolones hasemerged worldwide during the lastdecade. Salmonella isolates resistantto oxyiminocephalosporins becausethey produce extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) have emergedworldwide since 1992. This emer-gence has caused concern sincecephalosporins are drugs of choice totreat salmonellosis in children, towhom fluoroquinolones must not beadministered because of toxicityissues. In Denmark, the first ESBL-producing isolate of animal originfrom a Salmonella enterica serovarHeidelberg isolated from a boarimported from Canada in 2003 wasreported (2), but such isolates havenot previously been reported in foodproducts
