The seventh annual Conference onNew and Re-Emerging InfectiousDiseases, April 15–16, 2004, washosted by the Center for ZoonosesResearch and the College ofVeterinary Medicine at the Universityof Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Theconference featured eight speakersand 31 poster presentations. The conference was opened with apresentation on Yersinia enterocoliti-ca, a gram-negative enteric humanpathogen that causes enterocolitis.Invasin is the primary requirement forefficient translocation of the bacteriaacross the intestinal epithelium; theidentification of both positive andnegative regulators of its expressionhave been identified
