Hedgehog Zoonoses

Exotic pets, including hedgehogs, have become popu-lar in recent years among pet owners, especially in NorthAmerica. Such animals can carry and introduce zoonoticagents, a fact well illustrated by the recent outbreak ofmonkeypox in pet prairie dogs. We reviewed known andpotential zoonotic diseases that could be carried and trans-mitted by pet hedgehogs or by wild-caught hedgehogs thathave been rescued
