Dengue Virus Type 3, Cuba, 2000–2002

To the Editor: In 1994, denguevirus type 3 (DENV-3) was reintro-duced into Latin America after anabsence of 17 years, and was isolatedalmost simultaneously in Nicaraguaand Panama. In September 2000,DENV-3 was isolated for the firsttime in Cuba, producing a small out-break that affected 3 areas of HavanaCity. In total, 138 cases of denguefever were confirmed, with eitherDENV-3 or DENV-4 as the etiologicagents. No dengue hemorrhagic fevercases were observed, and the outbreakwas brought under control within 6weeks (1). At the end of June 2001,dengue was again reported in Havana.Through the end of February 2002, atotal of 14,443 dengue cases werereported for the entire country, includ-ing 81 cases of dengue hemorrhagicfever and 3 fatalities (2).
