Epidemiology of hepatitis C virus - Genotypes 1 through 6 in Asia and the world

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has become a major cause of liver diseases worldwide. Chronic HCV infection can induce serious complications including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Distinct viral genotypes respond differently to antiviral treatment. Moreover, the distribution of viral genotypes varies widely based on geographical areas. HCV genotypes 1, 2 and 3 distribute worldwide. Genotype 1 (1a and 1b) is the most common genotype in the world and has a high prevalence in the United States, Europe and East Asia.
