Given the importance of reliability and availability issue in wind turbines, the current paper presents the design and development of a novel active fault-tolerant control scheme for an offshore wind turbine. The proposed scheme tolerates the effects of any possible fault that may happen in pitch actuators of wind turbine blades. A model-based fault detection and diagnosis system provides fault information that are accurate enough for compensation of fault effects in the pitch control loop. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is finally evaluated through simulations on an advanced offshore wind turbine benchmark model in the presence of wind turbulences, measurement noises, and realistic fault scenarios.
