Incidence in Overweight and Obesity among Schoolchildren, Ahvaz-2010

BackgroundandObjective:Withchangesinlifestyle,childhoodoverweightandobesityaremostimportanthealthproblemsinbothdevelopedanddevelopingcountries.TheaimofthisstudywastodeterminethefrequencyofoverweightandobesityinschoolchildreninAhvaz.SubjectsandMethods:Inadescriptivecross-sectionalstudy1,594(52.38%male)healthyschoolchildrenaged6to10inAhvazwereassessed.Heightandweightweremeasuredandbodymassindex(BMI)calculatedforall.TheywereconsideredoverweightandobeseifBMIwas85and95percentilerespectivelycomparedtostandards.Results:52.38%weremale.Agedistributionfor6to10yearsoldwas18,21.3,19.9,20.2,and20.5%respectively.Prevalenceofoverweightandobesitywas17.7and18.8%.Girlshadgreaterrisktobeoverweightandobesecomparedtoboys(21.74vs.16.17%;P=0.001,and21.08vs.14.65%,P=0.005respectively).Conclusion:Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatprevalenceofoverweightandobesityisnoticeable,especiallyamonggirls.Nearahundredpercentincreaseinbothoverweightandobesityinlessthantenyearsisawarning.Interventionwitheducationandchangeinhabitsandfeedingbehavioraremandatory.
