Research on two dimensional (2D) materials, one of the mostextensively studied classes of materials, has grown rapidly over thepast several years and attracted great attention of thousands ofscientists from across materials science, physics, chemistry, engineering, medicine and industry [1,2]. This research activity hastriggered the emergence of a new generation of atomically thinmetals, semimetals, semiconductors, nitrides, oxides/hydroxides,transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), topological insulatorsand even polymers, demonstrating the potential for novel properties and technological innovations. The topics of the special issueinclude TMDs and transition metal oxides (TMOs), graphene andgraphene-derived materials, black phosphorus (BP), 2D metals, andrelated heterostructures/hybrids/composites and their potentialapplications in energy, environment, electronics, and biology fields.
