摘要

Carole was born in South Africa on June 23, 1960. Her parents, Joseph and Riva Marcus, lived close to her in Philadelphia. She had two brothers, Anthony and Neil, two kitties Amber and Tabitha and innumerable friends.Carole in St. Lucia, January 2017Carole in St. Lucia, January 2017Carole graduated medical school from the University of Witwatersrand in 1982. Soon after she moved to the United States to start her internship in Pediatrics at Schneider Children's/Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and then finished her chief residency in pediatrics at the State University of New York. Carole moved to Los Angeles for a fellowship in pediatric pulmonology and research fellowship at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles; she loved California and often thought about retiring in San Diego.Carole joined Johns Hopkins University in 1991. She was the Medical Director of the Pediatric Sleep Center and the Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship Director until 2003, when she moved to Philadelphia and joined the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania where she was the Director of the Sleep Center, and Co-Program Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Award. Carole built long lasting friendships with her colleagues at these institutions and looked forward to seeing them especially during meetings. She often remembered how much fun she had when the American Thoracic Society International Conference was in Philadelphia in 2013 and several colleagues stayed at her home.During her more than 20 years of experience Carole made enormous contributions to the field of pediatric sleep medicine becoming world-renowned and a leader in the field, particularly in the area of obstructive sleep apnea. She was frequently invited to be a speaker in national and international conferences. Carole loved travelling and during these meetings she would take a few extra days to enjoy side trips. During the Sleep Meeting in Minneapolis in 2014 she took a short trip to Fargo, North Dakota. This was her last state to visit to complete her visits to every state in the United States. She found out that Fargo is commonly visited last by many people, in fact the visitor center mailed her a certificate, a map and a t-shirt (photo), she was so happy! Internationally she travelled all over the world, particularly to exciting places that most people wouldn't think about visiting. When invited to the Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology in Bali, she travelled overnight by boat to visit the Komodo dragons. I had never seen her so exited! She loved animals, and she loved nature.Carole received many awards. In 2014, she received the R. Anderson Pew Distinguished Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. In June 2015, she was awarded the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award in recognition for her contributions to the understanding and treatment of childhood obstructive sleep apnea and other breathing disorders, the same year Carole received the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Mentor Award. She displayed her awards, diplomas, photos and gifts on bookshelves and walls in her office, but in front of her desk she had a few quotes typed on plain paper one of them from Ralph Waldo Emerson to know even one life has breathed easily because you live. This is to have succeeded. Carole exemplified this quote with her life dedicated to children with sleep-disordered breathing.I met Carole when I joined CHOP. She called me as soon as I arrived to Philadelphia to get together for brunch so she could orient me to the city; she had just arrived from Burma and was tired and jet lagged but never too tired to help. I mentioned to her that I always wanted to go to the Metropolitan Opera to see Placido Domingo. She did not like opera, yet she went with me. Carole loved to spend time with friends, enjoyed dinners, had season tickets for ballet, and never missed a flower show. At work she was the boss, after work she was the friend and at all times she was Carole, an amazing person. It is comforting to meet her mentees, friends, colleagues and people who knew her all over the world and to learn that each of us treasures special moments and experiences shared with her. She built a family that surpasses country borders and languages. Carole died on November 19 of 2017 surrounded by her family, but she will forever live in our hearts, minds, and science. With love and admiration, Lourdes M. Anderson Pew杰出儿科捐赠椅子。
