Policy Interventions for Sustainable Development of Farmers in India: Framework and Perspectives

Agriculture is the mainstay of Indian Economy with54.6% of the population engaged in agriculture and allied activities(Census 2011), contributing to 17.4% to the country’s Gross ValueAdded (GVA) for the year 2016-17. However, still the socioeconomic upliftment of farmers and workers in agriculture and alliedservices remains the biggest challenge. Although the Government hastaken several steps for the sustainable development of this sectorincluding launching a number of schemes in this direction likeNational Policy for Farmers (NPF) which are being operationalizedthrough various schemes and programmes that are beingimplemented by different Central Government Departments andMinistries.
