UEMS: The Standardization of the Medical Specialties and Modalities

The European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) has been established in 1958, and represents all medical specialists anddisciplines in Europe. Its main aim is to set the standards for the promotion and harmonization of high quality educationand healthcare practice within the European Union. The initial activities of the Union had to do with the standardizationof the main medical specialties. Nevertheless, since 1958 Medicine has evolved, and new specialties and modalities havebeen established. Today, the European Union of Medical Specialists represents 43 main medical specialties and 18 newmedical modalities, which are common areas of different specialties. UEMS has acquired a vast experience on thestandardization of medical training. and different disciplines. Medical Acupuncture is a modality that can be applied bymedical doctors of various specialties, and an application has already been submitted for it to be included in UEMS’sregisters.
