Suture line in intestinal anastomosis: Effect of intraluminal pressure during normal intestinal transit. Clinical implications

The effect of intraluminal pressure on suture lines after intestinal anastomosis, was studied on 17 pigs, on which intestinal anastomosis were performed. It was found that if a correct surgical technique was used and paralytic ileum was absent, there was no increase in dehiscence of the suture lines caused by intraluminal pressures occurring during normal intestinal transit. Clinical implications are discussed in relation to early liquid ingestion after surgery.
