Energy Flow Analysis of an Alternative Fuel Production Facility in South Australia

Suez-ResourceCo in Adelaide is a Construction & Demolition and Commercial & Industrial waste processing facility that produces alternative fuel for the local cement kiln operation. In recent years, Australia has seen an increase in energy cost and the state of South Australia has experienced a significant rise: approximately 29% increase in wholesale electricity price (2015/16 to 2016/17). Although the facility has been monitoring energy consumption at the gate level, the highly variable profile and many assets in operation have motivated the facility to conduct an energy flow analysis. The study identifies key assets for sub-metering to understand their energy profile and validate overall energy flow of the facility. The result outlines how the design paradigm of the waste industry has led to vastly over-sized plant leading to low efficiencies and power factors. Hence, potential energy and GHG saving is quantified through proposed efficiency gains.
