Suicide and the natural environment: an Indigenous view

Suicide has recently emerged as a subject of discussionunder the framework of planetary health. Helbich andcolleagues 1 state that municipalities with more greenspace could reduce their suicide rates, and that exposureto natural environments lowers suicide mortality. Changand Gunnell 2 echo the need for further research oninformed land use and urban planning to reduce suiciderates. However, exposure to green space is not alwaysa positive factor contributing to better mental health,since nature is perceived, accessed, and used differentlyby people of different socioeconomic and culturalbackgrounds.
