The administration of stable iodide to hyperthyroid patients has been known to produce clinical benefitsince the era of von Basedow (1840) and Trousseau (1863)(1–5). Although iodide was used in a desultory mannerduring the 19th and early 20th centuries, this form oftherapy received wide acceptance after the astute observations of Neisser (1920), Loewy and Zondek (1921), andPlummer (1923) (1, 4).
