The liberating and renewing power of the gospel of Jesus as Saviour was important for Luther. This gives his thought a narrative and Christocentric emphasis. Two-nature Christology is therefore the structuring principle of his theology, and he is critical towards what he considers Nestorian separations of the divine and the human. This corresponds in his view to true catholicity as referred to in the church’s confessions. Religiosity under modernity has a theistic emphasis that differs from Luther’s insistence on always seeing the divine and the human together.
