Role of cardiac biomarkers in detection of myocardial damage in children with hematological malignancies treated with anthracyclines

Objective: Anthracyclines exposure during treatment of childhood malignancies poses a high risk for development of late cardiotoxicity. Cardiotoxicity is usually diagnosed when patient is symptomatic with progressive cardiac dysfunction. Early detection is important to institute early therapeutic interventions to improve outcome. Aim of present study was to evaluate cardiac troponin T (cTnT), N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) and creatinine kinase MB isoenzyme (CK-MB) and echocardiography in the detection of cardiac abnormalities in asymptomatic children treated for hematological malignancies with anthracyclines.
