Application of best practice towards improving Web site visibility to search engines: a pilot study

The purpose of this research was to identify, report on and implement the milestones of creating a well-optimized and visible Web site. A literature survey highlighted Web site elements which could affect its visibility. An e-commerce based Web site was selected as an example to determine if these elements were lacking. A Web site inspection tool was used to evaluate the chosen site. The results were then analysed and several changes, including meta tags, graphics, JavaScript, frames and TITLE tags, were made accordingly, without modifying the layout of the Web site. The Web site inspection tool was then used to inspect the Web site again and results were compared. Areas affected were meta tags, frames, graphics descriptions, JavaScript and a site map. In conclusion, it was determined that a Web site could be optimized for visibility, without sacrificing the look-and-feel of the original version.
