Seroprevalence and Co-Infection of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 and Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Nigeria.

Background:Herpessimplexvirustype2(HSV-2)isasexuallytransmittedvirusthatisthemostcommoncauseofgenitalulcerationworldwide.TheincreasingevidencethatHSV-2infectioncouldsignificantlyenhancetheratesofsexualtransmissionandacquisitionofhu-manimmunodeficiencyvirus(HIV)indevelopingcountriesinformedourdesignofthisstudy.Objective:Todeterminetheseroprevalenceandco-infectionofHSV-2andHIVandtoevaluatetheirassociationwithdemographicfactorsamongadults(a‰￥15yrs)inPankshin.Methods:Onehundredandeightybloodsampleswerecollectedfromadults,agea‰￥15yearsfromTownClinicPankshinandGeneralhospitalBillangShippanginPankshinLocalGovern-mentAreaofPlateauState.DetermineTMandStatpakrapidtestkitswereusedtoscreenthecollectedsamplesforantibodiestoHIV.TheseroprevalenceofHSV-2wasdeterminedusingDiaproHSV-2typespecificELISAKitaccordingtothemanufacturera€?sinstructionalmanual.Results:TheestimatedprevalenceofHSV-2was24.4%anditwashigheramongwomen(26.09%)thanamongmen(21.53%).ThatofHIVwas19.49%;menhadaprevalencerateof4.69%whilethatofwomenwas5.22%.Conclusion:HSV-2antibodieswerefrequentinthestudygroup,genitalherpeswasnotre-portedbytheHSV-2positivesubjects,indicatinglowawarenessoftheHSV-2infection.TheprevalenceofHIVhoweverwasnotthatsignificant.Thepercentageofco-infectionwas2.8%.
