Incidence of Postoperative Vomiting and Laryngospasm in Pediatric Anesthesia Using Two Methods: Controlled Ventilation and Spontaneous Respiration

Background:Laryngospasmandpostoperativevomitingareseriouscomplicationsaftersurgeryinvolvingpediatricanesthesia,andthesecomplicationsmaycausemorbidity.Objectives:Theobjectiveofthisstudywastocomparetheincidencesoflaryngospasmandvomitingbetweentwogroupsofchildrentreatedwithanesthesia.Thepatientsweremanagedbyeithercontrolledventilationorspontaneousrespiration.PatientsandMethods:Thisprospectiveclinicalstudywasconductedwith200childrenwhohadunderwentelectiveinfraumbilicalsurgery.Thepatientsweredividedtotwogroupsofone-hundredcases,includingthecontrolventilation(CV)andspontaneousrespiration(SR)groups.Anesthesiainductionandmaintenancewerethesameinallpatients.However,intheCVgroup,atracuriumwasusedasamusclerelaxanttofacilitateintubationandsurgery.Results:Theincidencesofpostoperativevomiting,laryngospasm,andexcessivesecretionsweresignificantlyhigherintheCVgroupthantheSRgroup(P=0.001,0.02and0.001,respectively).Conclusions:Thisstudydemonstratedthattheincidencesofpostoperativevomitingandlaryngospasmaresignificantlyhigherinpatientsreceivinganesthesiawithmusclerelaxantsandcontrolledventilation.
