Periodontal Infections and Atherosclerosis: Mechanisms of Association

The bacteria associated with periodontal infection as well theby-products of host-bacterial interactions can have potentialsystemic effects. The field of periodontal medicine has emergedon the basis of the above and explores the interaction betweenperiodontitis and various systemic conditions, such as cardiovasculardisease (CVD), diabetes and pregnancy-relatedcomplications. Atherosclerosis constitutes the most importantrisk factor for serious cardiovascular incidents like myocardialinfarction. The links between periodontitis and CVD mightbe explained by the possible contribution of periodontitis tothe formation of atherosclerotic lesions. This review focuseson the mechanism of association between periodontal diseases(PD) and atherosclerosis.
