Unicystic Ameloblastoma as a Differential Diagnosis for Odontogenic Cysts

Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) is a variant of the solid ormulticystic ameloblastoma. Radiographically, though theunilocular appearance is common, it can produce multilocularlesions also. Histologically, the minimum criterion for diagnosinga lesion as UA is the demonstration of a single cystic sac linedby ameloblastomatous epithelium often only in focal areaswith or without areas of intraluminal or intramural proliferationor both. The clinical and radiologic presentation of UA cangive a confusing picture of odontogenic cysts especially whenit is seen in the inter-radicular or periapical area. Also, toothassociated UA may show features similar to dentigerous cyst.Hence histopathologic examination is essential to diagnosesuch cases. Here we present such a lesion which was initiallydiagnosed as an odontogenic cyst.
