Imaginative Journeys in the Verbal and Visual Arts: Walking in the Forests of W.S. Graham and Bryan Wynter

pThis article explores the concept of "visual language" with reference to the poet W. S. Graham and the community of artists he lived near in St Ives, Cornwall between the 1940s and 1980s. By comparing a writer’s visual language to that of an artist, one can investigate how the choice of material – poetry or paint – influences one’s process and the effect on the reader or viewer. As an example, one of Graham's poems is paired with a painting by Bryan Wynter to pick out key points of comparison and difference, followed by an original poem written in dialogue with these explorations./p.
